Whether those exact figures hold is a question for the documentation. What they illustrate is worth knowing regardless, because membership duration is the least understood setting in audience management.

It looks like a retention policy. It behaves like a multiplier.

Same inflow, two durations. The ratio between two lists with different durations does not depend on how big the business is. It is the ratio of the durations, whether the list gains ten members a day or ten thousand.

The floor that a shrinking list runs into

Audience lists have a minimum size below which they stop being served. That threshold does not move when a duration setting changes, which produces the failure that actually costs money: a list that worked at five hundred and forty days sits comfortably above the floor, and the same list at sixty days does not.

Nothing about this announces itself as a configuration problem. The campaign simply stops delivering, the audience shows as too small, and the cause is a setting somebody changed weeks earlier for a good reason.

The check is arithmetic and takes a minute: divide the current list size by the current duration to get the effective daily inflow, then multiply by the proposed duration. If the answer is near the floor, the shorter duration is not available at the current volume, whatever its other merits.

What the shorter duration is actually for

Given all that, a sixty-day cap sounds like a downgrade. It is better understood as a different trade.

Everyone on a sixty-day list interacted within the last two months. Consent, if consent is the basis, was given recently rather than eighteen months ago. Contact details are recent enough to still match. And the list cannot contain someone who has been receiving the same remarketing for a year and a half, which is a real outcome on a five-hundred-and-forty-day list and rarely an intended one.

Matching described as working without third-party cookies belongs in the same picture: shorter, fresher, first-party. The size is the price of that, and for a large enough audience it is a price worth paying.

Before changing the setting

Two figures make the decision straightforward. The first is the current list size divided by the current duration, which gives the daily inflow the list actually has rather than the one anyone assumes. The second is the serving floor for the audience type in question.

With those two numbers the answer falls out without an experiment, and the experiment is expensive: an audience that drops below the floor takes a full duration cycle to grow back, and during that time the campaign attached to it is not running.

Questions and answers

Why does a list with many repeat buyers converge lower than the formula suggests, and what does that mean for the check?

Because the formula counts additions and the list counts people. Someone who buys again within the duration does not become a member a second time; the re-add only restarts their clock. In the steady state the list therefore holds as many people as were added at least once in the last sixty or five hundred and forty days, and as soon as repeat buyers are among them, that is fewer than daily inflow times duration.

The effect is stronger at the long duration. A customer who buys every month sits on both lists continuously and counts exactly once on each; a customer who buys once stays on the long list nine times as long as on the short one. The 9 : 1 ratio therefore holds for members who are added only once, and the more repeat buyers a list carries, the closer it moves towards 1 : 1.

For the check before shortening the duration, that is good news. The calculation from the article, current size divided by current duration times planned duration, assumes the ratio of the durations and therefore tends to underestimate a list with many repeat buyers rather than overestimate it. If that estimate is already safely above the floor, the shorter duration will hold. If it falls just short, the real size may still clear the floor, and a more precise count in the advertiser’s own system is worth it: the ratio between the distinct people added in the last sixty days and those added in the last five hundred and forty then replaces the assumed ratio of 1 : 9.

Can a short membership duration replace removing someone after consent has been withdrawn?

No. Expiry only takes someone out of the audience once their duration has run out, possibly weeks later, and it deletes no customer record. Anyone who withdraws consent has to be removed from the list straight away, by the same route through which members are added, and flagged in the advertiser’s own system so that the next sync does not add them again.

What does a shorter membership duration do to lists meant to exclude existing customers?

It makes the exclusion leaky. An exclusion list shrinks with the duration too: anyone last added more than sixty days ago drops out and sees advertising aimed at new customers again. The same applies when a list marks existing customers, for example for a new customer acquisition goal: whoever drops out counts as new again, provided the list is the only source for that distinction.

For exclusions the longer duration is therefore usually the right one. If the same list has so far served both targeting and exclusion, a change calls for two lists with separate durations rather than changing the one setting for both purposes.

Sources

About Customer Match

A shorter membership duration does not shrink a list a little.
