Initial DOM-ready and window-load events therefore do not describe later product views or checkout actions. Reliable GA4 e-commerce tracking needs a clear application event, complete data and an explicit rule against duplicate reporting.

1. Separate navigation, data readiness and business actions

A history change confirms navigation, not that an asynchronous product or cart request has finished. The application should report a product view after the relevant view data is ready, an
add_to_cart
after the addition succeeds, and a
purchase
after the order reaches the agreed completed state.

GTM maintains an internal data model. Depending on variable configuration, later updates can retain or merge earlier nested values. Clearing
ecommerce
prevents stale fields from carrying over; it does not delete the dataLayer array or all GTM state, and missing resets do not inevitably duplicate every item.

A ready action produces a snapshot, a reset and one event message. Consent and duplicate control remain separate.

2. Reset, then send event and data together

Google’s GTM examples clear
ecommerce
before the next e-commerce event. The event name and complete payload belong in the same subsequent message, so the trigger reads the intended event data. GTM processes messages in arrival order. This is an ordering pattern, not a guarantee of thread safety, network delivery or globally race-free tracking.

The following JavaScript helper copies the payload before queuing it. Later application changes cannot mutate that queued snapshot. The example requires browser support for
structuredClone
and deliberately returns false during server-side rendering or if copying fails.

function dispatchGa4EcommerceEvent(eventName, ecommercePayload) {
  if (typeof window === 'undefined') return false;
  if (typeof eventName !== 'string' || !eventName) return false;
  if (!ecommercePayload || !Array.isArray(ecommercePayload.items)) return false;
  if (typeof structuredClone !== 'function') return false;

  let snapshot;
  try {
    snapshot = structuredClone(ecommercePayload);
  } catch (error) {
    return false;
  }
  window.dataLayer = window.dataLayer || [];
  window.dataLayer.push({ ecommerce: null });
  window.dataLayer.push({ event: eventName, ecommerce: snapshot });
  return true;
}

A true result means the two messages were queued, not that GA4 received or accepted an event. This helper does not validate the full GA4 schema, enforce consent, await API results or deduplicate purchases. Event names, items, numeric prices and quantities, currency and transaction identifiers need validation before the call. Errors and false returns need handling in the application.

3. Connect application events to GTM

A Custom Event trigger matches the intended name, such as
add_to_cart
or
purchase
. Route changes and All Pages are not substitutes for completed business actions.

The GA4 Event tag uses the matching event name and sends e-commerce data from the Data Layer. A separate variable for the whole
ecommerce
object is useful for custom mapping or inspection, but is not inherently required when the tag reads the Data Layer directly.

Consent defaults must be established before measurement tags. CMP templates should use the GTM Consent APIs for defaults and updates. Tag sequencing is not a substitute for waiting for an actual consent decision or applying the required consent behavior.

If a permitted User-ID is needed, its value must be available before the event and cleared when appropriate, such as on sign-out. It must not contain an email address or other directly identifying data.

4. Effects and repeated events

React
useEffect
runs after a commit; it does not wait for every asynchronous request to finish. A successful action callback is often the better origin for cart changes. View-based effects need explicit readiness conditions and protection against responses from a route that is no longer active.

React compares dependencies with
Object.is
. Fresh object references can rerun an effect. Strict Mode can additionally run an extra development-only setup/cleanup cycle; disabling Strict Mode hides a useful test rather than fixing duplicate reporting. Production remounts, retries and repeated handlers still require investigation.

Purchases need a stable, non-empty
transaction_id
unique to the order. GA4 documents purchase deduplication for web streams using transaction IDs. A local
sessionStorage
marker can reduce repeated sends within a tab, but is not a cross-device ledger or confirmation of delivery. A marker set before an unsuccessful send can also suppress a later valid attempt.

5. Count page views through one intended path

Automatic history-based page views can suit an SPA when the measured views and metadata are correct. Manual page views are an alternative. If the application sends the initial page view itself,
send_page_view: false
disables the Google tag’s automatic initial event. History-based Enhanced Measurement is a separate setting and must also be disabled when manual routing handles those views.

Not every history update represents a new meaningful screen. The measurement design should define which transitions count and set the current title, full page URL and appropriate previous-view referrer. Network payloads and DebugView need inspection for initial load, forward/back navigation and asynchronous views; counting request URLs alone is insufficient because events can be batched or proxied.

Questions and answers

Does ecommerce: null trigger the purchase tag?

The shown reset contains no event key and does not trigger a Custom Event tag by itself. It clears only the ecommerce branch. Custom code that observes pushes is outside that statement.

Does the pattern guarantee accurate revenue?

No. Tests must also cover repeated clicks, failed API calls, route changes during loading, confirmation-page reloads, consent changes, invalid data and blocked delivery. A production build and reconciliation against completed orders provide checks beyond development-mode event counts.

Sources

Google Analytics 4 event reference

MDN Web Docs

FIFO processing, event bundling and Consent APIs

History/custom-event pageviews and DebugView

Initial send_page_view versus separate history measurement

Consent defaults and updates

Purchase transaction-ID deduplication, web streams and empty IDs

Commit timing and Object.is dependencies

Development-only extra effect cycle

Deep-copy behavior and failures

Practical check: inspect the items array before sending

An e-commerce event can arrive successfully while its product data is wrong. The GA4 E-Commerce Item Array Validator checks the JSON array locally and points to the affected field, for example
items[0].price
. A quoted price such as
"12.50"
is reported as a type error instead of silently converted.

The check distinguishes errors from review notes. Repeated product IDs can represent variants; they do not automatically prove duplicate purchases. Missing prices prevent a complete calculated value. Zero quantities remain zero, while omitted quantities default to one. The sum uses the already discounted price and excludes tax and shipping. Event-level currency and transaction identifiers still need a separate check.

A useful workflow is to check the array, inspect the actual network request and then reconcile the recorded orders. Passing this structural check alone does not establish correct collection or reporting. Rules and limits follow Google’s e-commerce guide and the <a
