Buy a GPU or Rent Cloud Compute: Availability, Setup and Running Costs of Local LLMs

Management Summary

Language models, AI systems for text and answers, can run on owned hardware or computers rented over the internet. The article compares the costs of these options. Ownership brings equipment, electricity and maintenance expenses; renting brings ongoing fees and possible extras. The purpose is to match spending to actual use. A useful decision considers the total cost of satisfactory results rather than the purchase price or an attractive hourly rate alone.

A local LLM is a language model running on a local computer. Alternatives include renting a GPU computer or accessing a ready-to-use model through a programming interface. GPU purchase price alone is not enough for comparison: the rest of the system, electricity, setup and actual work completed also matter.

Local costs: hypothetical monthly example: Purchase share: €50; Load electricity: €7.92; Idle electricity: €11.52; Local total: €69.44 / month; Cloud example: €80; additional costs excluded
€1,800 / 36 months; 80 load hours; 330 / 60 W; €0.30/kWh. Assumptions, not measurements.

Comparable information for purchase offers

A shop page is a snapshot. A useful comparison records the exact card model, total price and delivery status on the same day. The linked retailers are starting points for that check; no currently confirmed purchase price is stated here.

Detail Meaning for comparison
Exact model Manufacturer, memory capacity and variant must match.
Total price Shipping and any other applicable charges are included.
Delivery Stock status and a confirmed date are different information.
Observation date The recorded date matters because the offer may change.

An order button may allow a preorder. A stock message provides stronger information but does not replace a confirmed delivery commitment for the particular order. Destination, payment time and seller terms can change delivery. Euro and złoty prices require the same documented exchange rate and all additional costs for a meaningful comparison.

Procurement extends beyond the basket

Total purchase cost may include a power supply, case, cooling, motherboard, RAM and shipping. Used cards require assessment of condition and testing under sustained load. A memory modification can change warranty and support; the actual terms matter. Imports may add charges depending on order and destination, as well as possible return costs. One fixed percentage would hide these differences.

LLM VRAM estimator helps plan memory. Insufficient graphics memory can mean running part of the model on the CPU, processing less input text or selecting a smaller model. This changes waiting time or usable tasks and therefore the cost comparison.

An explicitly hypothetical cost example

This freely chosen example assumes €1,800 for the complete computer over 36 months of use. The month has 30 days, or 720 hours. Model work occupies 80 hours with 330 watts of whole-system consumption. The computer remains on for the other 640 hours, consuming 60 watts. Electricity costs €0.30 per kilowatt-hour. These are assumptions, not RTX 5090 measurements or a current purchase offer.

Dividing €1,800 by 36 months allocates €50 of purchase cost per month. This is neither an instalment plan nor tax depreciation: buying still requires €1,800. 330 watts equal 0.330 kilowatts. Over 80 hours, 0.330 × 80 = 26.4 kilowatt-hours cost €7.92. The other 640 hours cost 0.060 × 640 × 0.30 = €11.52. Total allocated cost is €69.44 per month. Maintenance, financing, taxes and possible resale value are excluded.

Cloud time and API tokens have different costs

An invented rental rate of €1 per billed GPU hour gives €80 for 80 hours. This is not a RunPod offer. These numbers are comparable only if both options deliver the same useful work in that time. Setup, downloads, waiting and unused powered-on rental time may also be billed. Storage may cost extra and continue charging after a stop. Transfer charges depend on the provider; RunPod explicitly lists no ingress or egress charges for Pods.

For the always-on example computer, the base is €50 allocated purchase cost plus €12.96 for 720 idle hours. Each loaded hour replaces an idle hour, adding (0.330 − 0.060) × 0.30 = €0.081. Here h means the number of loaded hours. Local cost is therefore €62.96 + €0.081 × h, while assumed rental costs €1 × h. Equality occurs at about 68.5 hours. If the computer were completely off and consumed nothing outside work, local cost would be €50 + €0.099 × h and equality about 55.5 hours. Both thresholds apply only to these assumptions, equal work completed and no additional costs.

An API is a programming interface to a service. Model APIs often bill input and output tokens separately; tokens are text pieces, not a fixed number of whole words. GPU rental instead buys computer time. A fair comparison therefore counts total cost for the same number of useful tasks, such as 100 checked document summaries. Retries after errors, setup and waiting also matter. Equal prices reveal little if one option fails to meet the required quality.

Questions and answers

Does an orderable GPU listing prove immediate availability?

No. An order option may be a preorder. The particular seller, current stock status and confirmed delivery date need to agree.

At what usage level does a local LLM become cheaper than cloud use?

The examples establish thresholds only for their assumptions. Purchase cost, actual electricity use, shutdown time, billed rental time and equal useful work determine the comparison. A slower computer may need more hours for the same task.
