Current AI Models Compared: GPT, Claude and Gemini versus DeepSeek and Qwen

Management Summary

AI models such as GPT, Claude, Gemini, DeepSeek and Qwen support work with text, information and software. They are used through chats, within other applications or, in some cases, on owned hardware. The article explains why no model is automatically the best choice for every job. Different tasks need different strengths. For a business, the useful comparison is the quality of the finished result, the corrections required, the waiting time and the total cost rather than a general ranking.

A chat window is a ready-made application. A model API lets other programs send requests to a model. Downloadable weights are the model’s stored numbers and allow it to run with suitable software. These three forms of access differ in usability, data transfer and cost. This overview, dated 26 October 2026, uses manufacturer documentation; no original performance tests were conducted.

Five questions for a fair model comparison: Which specific task must succeed?; Which model version and settings are running?; Do inputs stay local or go to a provider?; Which errors appear in the same test for each model?; What do responses, corrections and operation cost?
This is a selection method; no original model benchmarks were conducted.

The concrete comparison set

The example selection includes OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna, and Anthropic’s Claude Fable 5.1, Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5. Google lists Gemini 3.8 Flash as a stable API version. DeepSeek V4.1 Flash and Qwen3.8-27B are examples with downloadable weights. This is not an exhaustive list. An API catalogue entry also does not guarantee access through a particular chat subscription. [1, 3, 6, 7, 8]

Access and operational control

Family Concrete candidates Deployment Key check
GPT Astra / 6.1 Sol / Luna Hosted API Which task succeeds at what cost?
Claude Fable 5.1 / Opus 5.5 / Sonnet 5.5 Hosted API Are the required tools available?
Gemini 3.8 Flash Hosted API Are the required file types supported?
DeepSeek V4.1 Flash API or published weights Does the full model fit in available memory?
Qwen 3.8-27B Downloadable files or a compatible model service Are the model file and computing software compatible?

The model cards specify the MIT licence for DeepSeek V4.1 Flash and Apache 2.0 for Qwen3.8-27B. Other variants may have different terms. Downloadable weights do not mean that all training data is public. Self-hosted models still require hardware, electricity and maintenance; a free download does not make operation free. [7, 8]

Ollama runs models

Ollama manages model files and runs supported models. A comparison therefore needs the exact model file and Ollama version. A model tag identifies the chosen variant; quantisation stores numbers more compactly; context length limits how much text can be considered. These details belong in the test log. Ollama also offers cloud features, so the actual execution mode determines whether inputs leave the computer. [9]

A useful shortlist

Selection begins with the task. Several cloud models may suit a text summary; video or audio files first require support for those input types. Gemini 3.8 Flash documents both. OpenAI and Anthropic variants differ in price and intended use, among other factors. Manufacturer descriptions identify candidates, not a winner for a particular task. For local execution, model-file support and memory demand matter; even Qwen3.8-27B does not automatically fit on a small graphics card.

A simple comparison uses identical inputs and criteria defined in advance. For example, a summary must retain three stated dates and must not invent another date. Each task is repeated several times. The log separates factual errors, required edits, response time and costs. Tool access and settings also need comparable documentation. A cheap request requiring extensive correction can cost more overall than a pricier request producing a usable result.

Questions and answers

Is Ollama a competitor to GPT or Claude?

Ollama manages and runs supported models. Answer quality depends on the selected model and its settings. A useful comparison therefore identifies both.

Are open-weight models automatically suitable for local use?

A download alone is insufficient. Software must support the exact model format, and available memory must hold the model and its calculations. The terms for the particular variant also apply.
